Publisher’s Memo
THE CURRENT CLIMATE
“Girl Gives Up Beer to Feed Horse.” Yes, that was an
actual headline from a very large East Coast newspaper.
Now, I follow the news pretty closely and I know things
are pretty dicey right now. Fuel costs have hit record highs
while the housing market has hit record lows. Fortune 500
companies are crumbling under heavy losses, the lending
market has tanked and hurricane season is peaking.
Suffice it to say that these are challenging times.
But certainly not hopeless. My view of these things
is that in every challenge lies opportunity. Let’s take, for
example, rising fuel costs. What does that mean for the
equine professional? Higher hay prices, sure, but it also
means that folks are sticking closer to home and opting to
take a “staycation” rather than a vacation. (Don’t you just
love these buzzwords?) For horsepeople, that translates
to more time spent with their animals, hopefully taking
some more lessons, too. I’ve often noticed that when times
get tough, people tend to turn to their passions, and we are
lucky enough to be in a business that is bankrolled by passion.
So now is the time to get creative and perhaps offer
new packages or services (or beer). Better still, if you are
in the New England area and are attending the Equine
Affaire from November 13 to 16, I’ll be leading a discussion
on stable management and I would love to hear
your ideas (November 13, 2 p.m.). By then we’ll be able
to explore the opportunities a new president presents, too.
